The Shropshire Triathlon is an annual sporting event held in the County's northern town of Ellesmere. The event has grown rapidly since the first race which was held in September 1992. Compared to the success of subsequent years it was a relatively low key event but still attracted a high quality field of 120 athletes and a large number of spectators. In 1994 we moved the event to the summer time and changed to the current cycle route. Ellesmere has maintained the high standards of the early years which has resulted in the consistently high status awarded to the event by the British Triathlon Federation.
Triathlon is an exciting multi-discipline sport for all ages and abilities offering fitness, fun and friendly competition. The Shropshire Triathlon covers the classic Olympic distances of a 1500m swim in the Mere, followed by a very fast 40km cycle circuit heading into the North Wales countryside (with very little traffic for the most part and "closed roads" through the town). The run is now a “Y” shaped “, out - and - back” course with a dog leg (giving an excellent spectator vantage point at the back gate to the Cremorne Gardens). It is on "fully closed roads" and is a tough and very undulating route - but the competitors love it.
The Triathlon start / finish is situated in the Cremorne Gardens by "The Mere". The venue is one of outstanding natural beauty and the gardens are a natural amphitheatre for the race generating a tremendous atmosphere. There are refreshment tents and commercial traders making a great day out. In general the race has been blessed in the good weather although the 1997 event took place in near storm conditions! 1997 also witnessed the oldest competitor to take part so far – Patrick Barnes at the sprightly age of 82. Patrick went on to represent Great Britain that year in the World Age Group Championships in Australia finishing with a silver medal.
*Doug's Notes* This event typically starts around 10am depending which wave you are in as opposed to the usual crack of dawn starts, although it is a couple of hours drive away you you still have to get up early but it is worth it for the post race food they lay on.
